Children as Engineers

Launching in November 2017, Children as Engineers is a free programme from UWE Bristol that brings together pre-service teachers (BA Initial Teacher Education) with undergraduate engineers (BEng/MEng) to run inspirational engineering activities in primary schools.

The programme provides a learning experience for the higher education students; with the teachers of the future gaining more experience, knowledge and confidence for STEM teaching, while the trainee engineers gain public engagement skills. Working together, the paired peers will mentor each other to develop exciting STEM activities for classes of KS2 primary school children.

Children throughout Bristol will get the opportunity to experience thinking like an engineer. Using the Engineering Design Process, children will solve real-world problems in their own lives. Not only that, but they will then have their creations reviewed and improved by real engineers at a conference held at UWE Bristol. There, the children will see cutting-edge STEM research and watch hi-tech robots and new engineering designs in action.
