Free planetarium shows coming to your school!

16 Aug 2022

The mesmerizing, curriculum packed, “We Make our Future” show – all about engineering and sustainability – can come to your school, and if you’re in an area of socioeconomic deprivation in the West of England – then the planetarium can visit you for FREE!

The show will empower your KS2/3 class to think scientifically so they can positively approach the Net Zero challenge in their local community.

The Bristol-based, inflatable planetarium company – Explorer Dome – use full-dome digital projections to take pupils on a trip to engineering marvels from history, followed by an exploration of the pros and cons of modern life.

Industry, technology and invention have progressed civilisation, but how has this impacted the planet? What is climate change? And what can we do to engineer our way out of the climate emergency? These are all questions the show addresses, showing children how they can be positive sustainability influencers in their communities.

Curriculum links include:

  • scientific concepts underpinning climate e.g. concept of gases
  • resources and sustainability
  • citizenship – jobs and contributing to society
  • linking action to reducing emissions on a local scale
  • engage in an iterative process of designing and making
  • explore ideas and raise different kinds of questions
  • changes in Britain from the Stone Age onwards

Logistics

Explorer Dome can usually set up their inflatable domes in a school hall, the shows are about ~50mins long and ~30 children + adults can fit in for each show.

A member of the Explorer Dome team welcomes children into the ‘dome’ for a “We Make our Future” show

‘We Make our Future’ was created by Explorer Dome in collaboration with the Digital Engineering Technology & Innovation (DETI) Inspire team at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), with funding from the West of England Combined Authority. For the 22/23 school year, the DETI Inspire team have secured funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering – Ingenious grant to provide FREE ‘We Make our Future’ shows to 10 schools in areas of socioeconomic deprivation in the West of England (BANES, Bristol, North Somerset, and South Glos).
