Talk STEM on Skype
The STEM Ambassador Hub West England are launching a new way for classes to meet people who work in STEM. Taking place via the video chat service Skype, children will be able to meet STEM Ambassadors, see where they work, hear about what they do and quiz them about their job, all without the teacher having to make complex arrangements for visitors or class outings.
To keep the interaction interactive and meaningful whilst also making it as easy as possible to arrange, chats take place between whole classes and individual STEM Ambassadors via the video messaging function available on Skype. This means the class and the STEM Ambassador do not need to be available online at the same time – they can watch messages and send replies at whatever time suits them. Chats are scheduled in to seasons, and the first season will take place during British Science Week, 8th – 17th March 2019.
The STEM Ambassador Hub West England ensures all the STEM Ambassadors involved are trained and DBS checked prior to volunteering, moderates the initial messages between STEM Ambassador and the class. The class teacher is able to view any video messages prior to showing them to the class, to familiarise themselves with the content and ensure it is relevant to their class.
The Talk STEM on Skype March 2019 season is open for participants – classes and STEM Ambassadors. For this first season the Hub is looking to recruit primary classes in schools from the West England region (Gloucestershire, South Glos, Bristol, North Somerset, BANES, Somerset, Wiltshire, Swindon, Dorset, Bournemouth & Poole), with STEM Ambassadors coming from within that same region.
