Build your skills & career

Green Skills are just any skill – like creativity and speaking – used to protect and restore the environment.

Everyone has a responsibility to look after our world, no matter what job you go into, there’s something you can do to contribute towards saving the planet.

If you have a passion to become a footballer or a hairdresser – use your skills and position to make your job as sustainable for the planet as possible – whether that’s installing solar panels on your business roof or buying equipment from sustainably sourced textile shops.

Your Skills

Each person featured on the “Inspire Green Futures” cards has their skills scored from 1 to 100 – you use those scores to play Top Trumps!

But you’ll notice that no one scores high in all the skill categories – everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Every job requires some skill in certain areas, but not so much in others.

Have you got a favourite green job card you’d love to do in a future career? Find out how your skills match up!

Use these two fantastic tools below – Skills Builder and My Skills My Life – create accounts on either website and get quizzed about your preferences & skills.

What’s particularly wonderful about Skills Builder is that it doesn’t just identify your top skills – but it has clear directions about developing your essential skills further.

Plus you can see how your top skills correlate to the green job cards and other Skills Builder job profiles.

This short 15 question personality quiz, reveals your top three strengths.

Compare your strengths directly on WISE to other people’s jobs but also to the green job online profiles (near the bottom of each page you’ll see each person’s strengths).

Your career

If you’re 11 years plus – Career pilot is the place to go to build your career.

Find information about tons of green jobs – a basic description, routes into those jobs, a live job board, career progression and lots of other useful bits and bobs

But Career Pilot is so much more – create a profile and enter all kinds of details related to your career – interests, values, work experience, skills. And they use some fun quizzes for you to find the job sectors you might like to explore.

It’s so worth filling in these details – because when later down the line you come to apply for a job or work experience, the tools help you to take your details and write your applications.

Teachers

If you’re keen to help your students identify their strengths, there are lots of activities in the Inspire Green Futures workshop that can help them explore their skills in groups or individually.
