Celebrating local children’s inventions at UWE Bristol

At the end of June, UWE Bristol’s Inspire Sustainability team, again hosted the annual “Engineering Family Fun day” at Frenchay campus, to celebrate the winning and shortlisted entries to the Leaders Award competition.

The Leaders Award challenges pupils nationwide: “If you were an engineer, what would you do?” and the regional winners were presented with their awards at an Awards Ceremony at UWE on the Friday 27th June. The display of invention ideas situated in the centre of the School of Engineering, was then flocked with STEM activities including planetarium shows, Minecraft and wind turbine creation, for the 800 strong crowd to enjoy the next day.

A green theme

Lots of the activities focused on sustainability themes:

• Planetarium show – the Explorer Dome highlighted how precious our planet is and how we have the tools to engineer a brighter future for our planet
• Green Job trail – 186 children took part in finding green jobs dotted around the building
• Craft a wind turbine nature park – this collage activity for younger children also showcased green jobs
• Power our Future – families competed to create wind turbine blades that generated the most electricity
• The Bristol Rainforest group – encouraged families to Grow Wilder and ran out of pomegranate seeds with their planting activity
