Local SEND kids explore their green futures at Grow Wilder
In August, the UWE Inspire Sustainability team took members of the Shirehampton group – Extraordinary Links – on a day out to Grow Wilder.
The event was one of the team’s “Green Future special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) summits” funded by the West of England Combined Authority to inspire children into future careers that support the transition to Net Zero.
The Extraordinary Links children, who all have a disability or special educational need, had a relaxing day living the life of an ecologist at Grow Wilder‘s urban growing hub. They investigated pond life and grassland critters, dissected owl pellets and foraged to add flavour to the (very much needed) ice cream at the end of the day.

This was the 14th SEND summit to take place since the Green Futures project launched in schools in February 2025. Other community groups, SEN schools and SEN groups from mainstream schools, visited We the Curious, UWE Bristol and the ss Great Britain, for their SEND summits.
At each summit the groups take part in a tailored Green Futures workshop – exploring what a green job is and some of the local inspirational people in green roles. They also explored the local STEM-relevant venue and took part in extra activities, like the Extraordinary links group did at Grow Wilder. These are great opportunities for enriching days out for SEN groups.
