Invitation to Twin your School Grounds with the protection of an equivalent area of Rainforest!
In the lead up to Big Green Week in June and World Conservation Day in July, an exciting new project has been launched to twin UK school grounds with an equivalent area of threatened tropical rainforest in the Tropical Andes – the most biodiverse hotspot on the planet!
The UK charity Rainforest Concern, which preserves threatened natural habitats and wildlife in Latin America and India, is inviting UK schools to measure up their school’s land and organise fun, forest-themed fundraising events to sponsor an equivalent area of rainforest. Funds raised through Forest Twinning will help to expand the 7,400-acre Neblina Cloud Forest Reserve in NW Ecuador – home to rare Andean bears (the inspiration for Paddington), pumas, ocelots and Isidor’s eagles – one of the world’s most endangered birds of prey.
Protecting threatened rainforest offers Key Stages 1-4 a powerful, hands-on opportunity to directly engage with rainforest conservation, and involves curricular subjects such as Maths, Geography, Science, Citizenship, Art and DT.
Forest Twinning is an excellent way of protecting tropical rainforests and the biodiversity they support, and helping to mitigate climate change. Engaging pupils in the protection of a specific area of tropical forest will create a direct link between your school, the Neblina Cloud Forest Reserve in Ecuador and the wildlife and local communities that live there.
