Chief Civil Engineer
-
Sarah works for EDF Energy’s New Nuclear Build at Hinkley Point C nuclear power station near Bridgwater.
She uses her expertise in construction to guide the civil designers on what problems they may face and how best to solve them. Requests for any building changes come to Sarah and she decides what can or cannot be approved.
Surprising bit? “I can go onto the HPC construction site, which is huge, and go anywhere I like to inspect what people are doing. I have walked down the 6m diameter water intake tunnels which go beneath the Bristol Channel – so I have stood under the sea 3.5km from the shore!”

Workplace: Sarah’s role is office based four days a week, at a desk with her laptop and two big screens. She goes onto site one day a week wearing full PPE (personal protective equipment), hard hat, hi-vis jacket and trousers, safety specs, gloves and boots.
Sarah works with the civil engineers who design the buildings, checking those designs and continuing to check them as their built. These engineers are based at Hinkley Point, in Bristol and Gloucester but also in EDF France – Paris, Lyon, Tours.
Sarah represents EDF with the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation. She also works with external technical organisations, in the UK and internationally, with the aim of improving knowledge of current engineering methods and research.
“The best part is I cover so many different types of topics, and I have fun investigating issues, asking people why this had happened and what they are doing about it? I can then offer my advice, and most times it proves to be very helpful to them and we solve the problem.”

Sarah’s Career Path
Sarah’s top tips for your career: “Think about what you enjoy first and the job will come out of that. If you like particular subjects at school, say physics and music, tell your teachers you really want to do those options.
“I wouldn’t worry about future careers, just take each step at a time and give your best to that, and then once you succeed at that you can look to the next step.”
